Economy and Industry in Kent
As of the 2001 UK census, Kent had a higher average of employment in the construction and transport/communications industries but a lower average for manufacturing compared to the rest of England. In recent years, there has been a significant drop in agriculture, whilst industry and services are increasing their utilisation of the area.
North Kent is heavily industrialised with cement-making at Northfleet and Cuxton, brickmaking at Sittingbourne, shipbuilding on the Medway and Swale, engineering and aircraft design adn construction at Rochester, chemicals at Dartford, papermaking at Swanley and a steel mill in Sheerness. There are also two nuclear power stations at Dungeness, although the older one was closed at the end of 2006.
